If you're a lover of typefaces and fonts, then you'll love the wealth of magazines
that are available to you. Below are some of the best sources for information, sample
and reviews of type, designs, type designers, foundries, books and more.
Identity Typelabs - Font Magazines
Typographer.com
The independant magazine of typography is unlike many other magazines
in print and on the web, Typographer.com is put together by the people who
it's aimed at - created by designers for designers. This is a great site for font
and type lovers. There is also no ads on the site, which makes the site nice
and quick to roam around in.
Key Site Features
Articles - Find the latest type news, and software reviews
Fonts - Get some of the newest and freshest free fonts available today
Foundries - Find your favorite foundries, and some new ones you didn't know existed
Books - The latest type books for review and purchase
The Font Talks
The Font Talks are a series of interviews featuring different font designers.
Here you get the chance to step into the mind of the designer and shed some light
on who they are, and how they get the ideas for their designs. In addition to
the interviews this growing site is offering more and more features.
U&lc Online
From ITC is one of my favorite font magazines, now available online. In
addition to interivews with designers, you'll also find articles and reviews on
typefaces. Check out previous issues in the archives to see what you missed.
U&lc Online is ITCs international journal of graphic design and digital media.
X-Height
Here's another of my favorite magazines for type. x-height was formerly a print
magazine, it now lives online at Dsgn Haus's website. x-height is where you will find
interesting and useful on and about type, design, designers and technology written by
well known industry experts.
Key Site Features
Type Families - A great article by Allan Haley
The Interrobang - Learn about the ultimate symbol - by Allen Haley
Serif
The Magazine of Type & Typography is the premier periodical for the typographic
arts. Serif is published on a quarterly basis, and has quite a following of type lovers.
This site includes contents of previous issues, lists of upcoming articles, samples from
the pages of the magazine and much more. Also check out Sans Serif which is a
companion site.
Emigre Magazine
The daring and always experimental type and design magazine from Emigre Graphics.
With articles by type designers like Rick Valicenti, Jeffery Keedy, Steven Heller and many
others, you'll find the views and concepts interesting and unusual. If you live in the US
and want to get a FREE print subscription you can sign up for one online.
Typofile
With type, the media is not the message. But type also adds to everything we read
in subliminal and powerful ways, and Typofile is about people who love type, and why.
From Daniel Will-Harris, Typofile is a great online magazine for type lovers.
Letter Arts Review
From monks slavishly copying illuminated manuscripts to designers behind
the mouse creating outrageous typefaces, Letter Arts Review consistently
reflects the highest caliber of work from every corner of the world.
The FontSite
FontSite authors Sean Cavanaugh, and Ken Oyer use a constantly evolving set of
tools to produce this great site. It is dedicated to font and graphic design professionals
to keep you up to date on the latest fonts and design techniques and programs to
enhance your designs.
